Sfântu Gheorghe

Szekler Transylvanian city on the Olt River with Hungarian culture and a landmark museum.

Sfântu Gheorghe, Sepsiszentgyörgy in Hungarian, is the capital of Covasna County and one of the main urban centres of Szeklerland. It sits on the Olt River, between the Baraolt and Bodoc Mountains, close enough to Brașov to work as a day trip but different enough to feel like a separate cultural world.

The city is mainly interesting for its Szekler Hungarian identity. The Székely National Museum is the anchor, both for its collections and for its Károly Kós-designed building. Around the centre are older civic buildings, a fortified church, a theatre with deep Hungarian roots and a relaxed central park.

This is not a town of blockbuster sights. Its value is more specific: if you want to understand the Hungarian-speaking communities of eastern Transylvania, Sfântu Gheorghe is one of the best easy bases.
