Alcaicería

The Alcaicería was Granada's ancient silk market, built in the 10th century alongside the Great Mosque. The original was largely destroyed by fire in the 19th century and the current narrow lanes of shops are a 19th-century reconstruction of the Moorish bazaar, but the atmosphere — dark alleyways lined with stalls selling silk goods, ceramics, spices, and leather — is still persuasive.

It's best understood as a tourist market rather than a living craft tradition, but the quality varies enough to reward searching. The silk goods produced in Granada's province are genuine, and the Granadino pottery (white with blue decoration) sold here is locally made. Avoid the aggressive sellers near the main entrances and wander deeper into the lanes for better finds.
