Tucked into the Renaissance Casa de Castril on the steep Carrera del Darro in the Albaicin, this museum is worth visiting as much for the building as for its collections. The ornate Plateresque facade hints at what waits inside: a thoughtfully arranged survey of Granada province's deep past, from Phoenician bronzes and Iberian sculptures to Roman mosaics and Moorish ceramics. The Egyptian collection, including several well-preserved mummies, is an unexpected highlight. The museum is small enough to see in an hour, and its location on one of Granada's most atmospheric streets makes it easy to combine with a wander through the Albaicin's narrow lanes and carmens.
