Seville Cathedral

Address Avenida de la Constitucion, Seville
Opening Hours Mon 11am-3:30pm, Tue-Sat 11am-5pm, Sun 2:30pm-6pm

The third largest cathedral in the world, Seville's Gothic giant was built between 1402 and 1506 on the site of the city's great Almohad mosque. The mosque's minaret — the Giralda — was incorporated as the cathedral's bell tower and remains its most recognisable feature. The interior is overwhelming: 15,000 square metres of vaulted space, a gilded main altarpiece that is the largest in the world, and the elaborate tomb bearing the remains of Christopher Columbus near the south door.

Entry includes the Giralda tower, which you climb via ramps (no stairs) designed to allow the muezzin to ride his horse to the top five times a day for the call to prayer. The views from the top over the old city are the best available. Book online to avoid the queue, which can be very long in peak season.

A story
When the Gothic cathedral was begun in 1402 on the ruins of the great Almohad mosque, the canons are said to have declared: "Let us build a church so great that those who see it finished will take us for madmen." It took over a century to complete and remains the largest Gothic cathedral in the world by volume — bigger than St Peter's in Rome when measured that way, though Rome exceeds it in floor area.
