Inside Seville's cathedral, near the south entrance, four bronze kings representing the kingdoms of Castile, León, Aragón, and Navarre bear an elaborate coffin said to hold the remains of Christopher Columbus. The monument is deliberately theatrical — Columbus never touched the ground of a country he felt had wronged him, so the pallbearers hold the coffin aloft. Whether the bones are actually his has been debated for centuries; DNA testing in 2006 confirmed at least some remains are authentic, though the Dominican Republic also claims to have them. A compelling stop even if you are already visiting the cathedral.
