General Archive of the Indies

Housed in a 16th-century merchant exchange designed by Juan de Herrera (architect of El Escorial), this UNESCO-listed archive holds 80 million pages documenting three centuries of Spain's American empire — letters from Columbus, maps of the New World, records of the Manila galleons. The building itself is as impressive as the documents: a serene Renaissance courtyard and the main reading room with its marble floors.
