Málaga is 14 km east — 20 minutes on the suburban train or metro — and is an entirely different city from Torremolinos. The Alcazaba fortress, the Picasso Museum, and the old city centre are all excellent reasons to make the trip. Antequera, about an hour by bus or car, is worth the effort for its Dolmen de Menga, a Neolithic chamber tomb older than Stonehenge, and for the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra where flamingos gather from January through August.
