Ajuria Enea

The official residence of the Lehendakari, the president of the Basque Government. The Basque-style chalet was built in 1918 for the industrialist Serafín Ajuria; the regional government acquired it in 1980 as the seat of its newly created executive.

The building is not normally open to visitors but is striking from outside: a half-timbered, pitched-roof Basque country house transplanted to a city corner. The "Pact of Ajuria Enea" signed here in 1988 by all major political parties — except Herri Batasuna — was the political framework for opposition to ETA violence.
