Plaza de los Fueros

A sloping public space designed by Chillida and Peña Ganchegui in the early 1980s as a piece of urban sculpture. The pink stone slabs step down in shallow terraces around a small fronton (Basque pelota court); a fountain and a small underground exhibition space complete the composition.

It is one of the more interesting pieces of late 20th-century public design in northern Spain — abstract, severe, and resolutely Basque. Locals use it as a meeting point and as the slope for a quick game of pelota.

A story
The plaza was designed in 1981 by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida and architect Luis Peña Ganchegui — Chillida wanted a 'place to play pelota in the centre of the city', and the south wall is a working fronton court that hosts matches and tournaments.
