Sequoia of Vitoria-Gasteiz

The remains of the great sequoia stand at the corner of the Parque del Prado, with an explanatory plaque. While the tree was felled after structural damage made it unsafe, a cross-section of the trunk and several saplings raised from its seed have been preserved on site.

A small, slightly melancholy stop for tree enthusiasts. The Prado, the city's largest park, is worth the wider walk regardless.

A story
Planted in 1875 from saplings imported from California, the tree reached over 40 metres and was Vitoria's tallest living thing for a century. It was declared a unique natural monument by the regional government before storm damage in the 2010s required its removal.
