Escola d'Olot

The Escola d'Olot — the Olot School — refers both to the 19th-century landscape painting movement that grew up around Joaquim Vayreda and to the institution that still trains artists in the town. The painters of the Escola worked outdoors in the Garrotxa countryside in the 1870s and 1880s, in conscious response to the French Barbizon school, and produced a body of work that helped define a distinctly Catalan landscape vision.

The Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny d'Olot, on the eastern edge of the town centre, is the heir to that tradition and is now the leading design school in the province of Girona. The college building has a small gallery space that puts on student and visiting exhibitions, and the work on display gives a sense of the school's contemporary direction. To see the historical Escola in depth, head to the Museu de la Garrotxa.
