Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa

The Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa is a natural park covering the best-preserved volcanic landscape in the Iberian Peninsula: more than forty Strombolian-type cones and twenty-eight lava flows in a relatively compact area. The volcanoes are extinct, but the lava soils have produced unusually fertile farmland and the cones themselves, smooth and rounded, dot the green plateau like overturned bowls.

The park information centre is at Can Serra near Santa Pau, where staff hand out maps of the walking routes — the most popular is Itinerary 1, a 10-kilometre loop linking the Croscat, Santa Margarida, and Fageda d'en Jordà sites. Most of the cones are private property and you walk around them rather than over them; a few, including Santa Margarida, have summit paths. The terrain is gentle and the walks are family-friendly.

A story
The Garrotxa volcanoes are among the youngest in continental Europe. The last eruption, of the Croscat volcano, dates to about 11,500 years ago — geologically yesterday — yet the cones are now so completely vegetated that you can stand on the rim of one and not realise where you are.
