The Església de Sant Esteve is the parish church of Olot — a substantial Baroque building on the Plaça Major, rebuilt in the 1750s after the previous medieval church was destroyed by the catastrophic 1428 earthquake. The interior is unexpectedly grand: a single nave with side chapels, decorated with the kind of dark altarpieces common to provincial Catalan Baroque.
The masterpiece is hidden inside: a Christ Carrying the Cross by El Greco, painted around 1605. The painting is in a side chapel and is roped off, but the lighting is good enough to see it properly. There are only a handful of El Grecos in Catalonia, and the one in this small inland town often surprises visitors.
