The Teatro García Barbón is Vigo's main performance venue, a 994-seat theatre in the heart of the city named after the 19th-century Galician industrialist who financed its construction. Opened in 1927, the building is one of the finest examples of early 20th-century theatre architecture in Galicia — an ornate facade in the eclectic historicist style, with a lobby and auditorium that have been carefully restored.
The theatre, now known under the sponsorship name Afundación Vigo, runs a year-round programme of opera, orchestral music, drama, and dance. The Orquestra Filharmónica de Galicia performs here regularly. Even if you are not attending a performance, the building is worth looking at from the outside on your way through the city centre.
