Mercado da Pedra (Stone Market)

The Mercado da Pedra sits at the foot of the old town, just back from the waterfront along Rúa da Pescadería. It is not a formal market building but an informal gathering of stone tables where local women sell freshly shucked oysters, clams, cockles, and other shellfish direct from the Ría de Vigo.

The experience is essentially the same whether you visit on a weekday morning or a Sunday afternoon: you lean against a granite slab, squeeze lemon over a half-dozen oysters, accept a glass of local Albariño from a nearby taberna, and eat. The oysters are plucked from the cold, clean waters of the ría and are among the best in Europe — briny, sweet, and cold. Around the stone tables, small bars sell wine, coffee, and bocadillos. It is the best introduction to Vigo's seafood culture and should be a first stop in the city.

A story
The oyster women of Vigo — the ostioneiras — have worked these granite tables since at least the 18th century, and the tradition has survived through every economic crisis and redevelopment. The market's name comes from the stone slabs they use to shuck; a dozen oysters with lemon and Albariño costs about three euros, making it possibly the best-value eating experience in Spain.
