Porta do Sol

Vigo's historic main square with Francisco Leiro's striking fish-man sculpture

The historic heart of Vigo and its main commercial square. Two cast-iron columns support a striking sculpture by local artist Francisco Leiro: O Sereo, a hybrid figure of fish and man gazing out towards the sea. The square marks the edge of the old walled town; when Elduayen Street was cut through in 1896, it divided the medieval city and opened up the bourgeois avenue towards Alfonso XII — the transformation that shaped modern Vigo.
