Set within the elegant Quiñones de León mansion in Castrelos Park — the finest municipal park in Galicia — this museum divides into three sections: Archaeology, the History of the City, and Art. The archaeology rooms display finds from Monte del Castro excavations; the history section covers the War of Independence; and the art collection focuses on 20th-century Galician painting, including a dedicated gallery of works by the artist Laxeiro donated by the artist himself.
The park surrounding the mansion is as good a reason to come as the museum itself. Well-maintained formal gardens, woodland paths, a small lake, and an outdoor theatre make it a popular local destination on weekends. Admission to the museum is free; the park is always open. Allow two or three hours for the full combination — bus or taxi from the centre is the easiest approach.
