Moderna Museet Malmö

Malmö's outpost of Stockholm's Moderna Museet occupies a former power station turbine hall, which gives it dramatically high ceilings and generous space for large-scale installations. The permanent collection covers Swedish and international modern and contemporary art from the 20th century onward, with particular strength in video art and installation work.

The museum rotates its shows frequently and often hosts major international exhibitions that don't make it to Stockholm. Admission is free for the permanent collection, which alone makes it worth an hour of anyone's time. The building sits in the Rörsjöstaden neighbourhood, a short walk south of the central station. A story
The building that houses Moderna Museet Malmö is itself a piece of history: a former turbine hall built in 1900 for the city's power station. When artists began squatting the abandoned building in the 1980s, they accidentally created one of Sweden's most vibrant art scenes — the Rooseum, which eventually evolved into the Moderna Museet's Malmö branch.
