Ljusdal

Halsingland town near decorated farmhouses, forest parks, and the Ljusnan river.

Ljusdal sits in western Halsingland, where the Ljusnan river cuts through forest, farms, and old parish villages. The town itself is small and practical, but the surrounding municipality has one of Sweden's most distinctive rural landscapes: painted timber farmhouses, summer pastures, riverside settlements, and long roads into deep forest.

The reason to come is the decorated farmhouses of Halsingland. Three of the seven UNESCO-listed farms are in Ljusdal municipality, and they are not grand castles pretending to be rural. They are prosperous nineteenth-century farmsteads whose owners poured money into painted guest rooms, carved porches, and ceremonial interiors used for weddings and village gatherings.

Jarsvo, just south of Ljusdal, adds a second focus with Järvzoo, Stenegard, and river-valley scenery. Farther west, Hamra National Park protects old-growth forest, bog, and quiet trails. A car makes the area much easier, but the train line along the valley means Ljusdal and Jarsvo can also work as slow rail stops between Gavle and Ostersund.
