Mount Makovytsia

The closest serious hike out of town — a 984-metre peak in the Gorgany range, with a marked trail leading up through beech and fir forest from the eastern edge of Yaremche. Round trip is about 8 kilometres and 600 metres of climbing; a reasonably fit walker can do it in four to five hours.

The summit is a grassy ridge with views west toward the Chornohora and Mount Hoverla, and east over the Carpathian foothills. There is a simple metal cross at the top. The path is well-marked but can be slick after rain — proper boots are sensible. In winter, expect snow above 700 metres from December through March.
