Blackpool Illuminations

Autumn light display stretching along the promenade, extending Blackpool's season after summer ends.

The Blackpool Illuminations are the town's great autumn ritual: miles of lights along the promenade, switched on after the main summer season would normally fade. They are not subtle, and subtle would be wrong here.

Walk part of the route, take a tram, or drive if you have patience for slow traffic. The lights are best understood as civic theatre rather than decoration, a statement that Blackpool refuses to go quietly into the dark.

A story
Blackpool first experimented with electric street lighting in 1879, when the novelty was so strong that visitors came just to stare. The modern Illuminations grew from that appetite for spectacle: seaside tourism powered by electricity and showmanship.
