Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Historic seafront amusement park with wooden coasters, modern rides, and full-throttle seaside excess.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is the resort's great amusement park, packed tightly beside the railway and promenade at South Shore. It mixes old wooden coasters, family rides, and high-adrenaline machines in a way that feels more urban and compressed than most modern theme parks.

The Big One still dominates the skyline, but the older rides give the park its character. Go expecting noise, queues, and weather exposure; go anyway if Blackpool's brash entertainment culture is what you came to see.

A story
Pleasure Beach keeps several old wooden roller coasters running in a country that has lost many of them. The Grand National, opened in 1935, is a racing coaster, so two trains leave together and the ride turns into a rattling contest as much as a thrill.
