Avenham and Miller Parks

Below Winckley Square, the land falls away towards the River Ribble and the two great Victorian parks — Avenham and the adjoining Miller Park — that were laid out in the 1860s as relief work for unemployed mill workers during the cotton famine. The result is one of the finest pieces of public parkland in northern England: terraced lawns, flower beds, a rustic Japanese garden, and the impressive Belvedere overlooking the river.

The Tramway Bridge (an old railway crossing converted to a footbridge) gives access across the Ribble to the south bank. Avenham hosts the annual Pace Egg Rolling on Easter Monday — one of the oldest surviving Easter customs in England.
