Preston's original Town Hall was a Gilbert Scott masterpiece — destroyed by fire in 1947 and never rebuilt. The current building, completed in 1962, is a calmer mid-century replacement in red brick and Portland stone, housing the city council offices. The interior is rarely open to the public, but the Council Chamber can be visited on occasional open-doors weekends.
The site is mostly worth knowing about as part of the Market Square ensemble: the Town Hall, the Harris, the cenotaph, and the restored square together make up the civic centre.
