St Wilfrid's, just off Winckley Square, is a Jesuit church and one of the most opulent Catholic interiors in northern England — extraordinary for a parish church. The current building, completed in 1880 to a design by S. J. Nicholl, replaced an earlier Jesuit chapel on the same site. The interior is a vault of polychrome marble, gilded mosaics, frescoed ceiling panels, and Stations of the Cross by the Belgian sculptor Karel Geerts.
Open for visits outside service times. The local Catholic community has held continuous services here since 1605, making it one of the oldest Jesuit foundations in England.
