Bristol Beacon

Bristol Beacon is the city's main concert hall and one of the best mid-sized venues in England, with a 2022 renovation that transformed the acoustics while preserving the Grade II listed Victorian building on Colston Street. The hall presents a wide programme from classical orchestral concerts — the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is a regular — to jazz, pop, and world music.

The building has a complex history, having been known as Colston Hall for most of its existence before being renamed in 2020 following the removal of Colston's statue nearby. The renaming was controversial in some quarters but welcomed by many in the city. The new name has stuck, and the hall is now established as Bristol Beacon in the civic landscape. It is worth checking what's on during a visit — the programme is usually rich and the venue excellent.

A story
The hall was originally called Colston Hall, named after Edward Colston, the Bristol merchant and philanthropist who was also one of the most significant figures in the transatlantic slave trade. In 2020, the same year that protestors pulled down Colston's statue in the city centre, the hall was renamed Bristol Beacon. The renaming coincided with a major renovation programme that also significantly improved the hall's acoustic quality.
