Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla is the main church of the municipality and one of the most important Santería pilgrimage sites in Cuba. The church contains the Black Virgin of Regla — a dark-complexioned Madonna figure that in the Santería tradition is syncretised with Yemayá, the Yoruba deity of the sea and motherhood. Pilgrims come from across Cuba to pray here.

The church is open for worship throughout the day and visitors can enter without ceremony. The combination of Catholic imagery and Santería offerings (blue candles and cloths are Yemayá's colours) makes the interior unlike any other church in Havana. The atmosphere is genuinely devotional rather than tourist-oriented.
