Ixtlán del Río is a small city in southern Nayarit, on the old road between Tepic and Guadalajara. It was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2023, but its real claim is older: Los Toriles is one of the most important archaeological sites in western Mexico and the only major Nayarit ruin open to visitors.
The town has a modest centre with the Parish of Santiago Apóstol, traditional food, and the Cerrito del Cristo Rey above it. None of this makes Ixtlán a big destination, but together it gives the town a real identity beyond being a highway stop.
It works best as a half-day or slow day if you are already travelling between Guadalajara, Tequila, Tepic, or the Nayarit coast. Come for the ruins first; let the town and hill view fill out the day.
