Calvillo is Aguascalientes' guava town, a Pueblo Magico west of the state capital in a warmer valley of orchards, sweets shops, and old churches. It is not as grand as Mexico's famous colonial cities, but it has a clear flavour of its own.
The centre is built around the large Parroquia del Senor del Salitre, with the Santuario de Guadalupe watching from higher ground. Around the plaza, shops sell ate, rolls, liqueurs, and other guava sweets that make the town feel different from other Bajio stops.
Calvillo also works because the landscape changes quickly outside town. Presa de Malpaso and the Sierra del Laurel give the visit an outdoors edge, while the small Museo Nacional de Pueblos Magicos explains the tourism identity that brought Calvillo more attention.
