El Potrero Chico is not just another mountain outside Monterrey; it is one of North America's great winter sport-climbing destinations. The limestone walls rise in pale fins and amphitheatres near the town of Hidalgo, with routes ranging from short cragging to long, bolted multi-pitch climbs.
Non-climbers can still appreciate the landscape, but the place is really built around climbing culture: simple lodgings, early starts, rope bags, and international visitors chasing dry-season conditions. If you climb, it belongs high on the Monterrey list; if you do not, go with someone who understands the terrain.
