MARCO — Museo de Arte Contemporaneo

MARCO is Monterrey's premier contemporary art museum and one of the finest in Latin America. The building, designed by Ricardo Legorreta and opened in 1991, is a striking piece of architecture in its own right — bold geometric forms in deep purple and terracotta, with a central courtyard flooded with natural light. It sits on the south side of the Gran Plaza, within easy walking distance of the city centre.

The collection focuses on contemporary Mexican and Latin American artists, with rotating special exhibitions that regularly bring in significant North American and European work. The permanent collection includes major names in Mexican modernism and contemporary practice. The gift shop and café are among the best in the city.

A story
The building's central atrium features a large bronze dove by Juan Soriano — a gift from Picasso's secretary that became the museum's founding symbol when MARCO opened in 1991. The dove sits in a pool surrounded by Ricardo Legorreta's signature purple walls and bright Mexican light, making it one of the most photographed spots in Monterrey.
