Jorullo Bridge

A 470-metre suspension bridge high above the Río Cuale gorge

A 470-metre suspension bridge strung across the Río Cuale gorge at a height of 150 metres, about 20 minutes outside of town. The bridge is part of the Canopy River adventure park, which also runs zip-line and ATV tours — you may share the bridge with a passing ATV. The views down into the jungle gorge are vertiginous. There is a restaurant and bar at the far end. Not the cheapest outing, but genuinely thrilling if you have a head for heights.

A story
Thirty-five local farmers built the bridge alongside local engineers in just eighteen months. A sign in the bar at the far end claims it is the longest vehicular suspension bridge in the world — take that with a grain of salt.
