Naval History Museum

Small free museum on the Malecón covering the bay's maritime past

A free municipal museum in a 19th-century building at the southern end of the Malecón, dedicated to the maritime history of Banderas Bay. The collection runs from prehispanic dugout canoes used by the Aztec coastal tribes through Spanish galleons and 19th-century coastal traders to the modern Mexican Navy. Several rooms contain detailed model ships, navigation instruments, and uniforms.

The exhibits are mostly in Spanish but the artefacts speak for themselves, and the upstairs gallery has good views of the river mouth and Los Arcos in the distance. Closed Mondays. Allow an hour.

Address: Zaragoza 1, Centro, Puerto Vallarta.
