Playa de los Muertos

The main town beach, lively and LGBT-friendly

Puerto Vallarta's most popular beach, stretching south from the Zona Romántica. Busy, colourful, and unapologetically social — beach vendors, restaurants spilling onto the sand, jet ski rentals, and a steady parade of people. The southern end around Blue Chairs is the centre of the city's LGBT beach scene. Water taxis to Yelapa and Las Ánimas depart from Los Muertos Pier at the northern end.

A story
The name — "Beach of the Dead" — dates to the 16th century, when one of Hernán Cortés's ships wrecked in Banderas Bay. Local villagers found bodies washing up on this stretch of sand for days afterwards.
