Iglesia de la Merced is a Baroque church from 1762, built for the Mercedarian friars before the order was expelled from Nicaragua in the 19th century. Its facade and long religious history make it a worthwhile stop on a walk through central Leon's colonial churches.
The church is close to the cathedral and several museums, so it fits easily into a short walking route around the old center. Look for the image of Saint Mary of Mercy, brought from Barcelona centuries ago.
