Iglesia La Recolección

La Recolección is widely considered the most beautiful of León's many churches, with a particularly fine Baroque facade that stands out even in a city with no shortage of colonial ecclesiastical architecture. The church was completed in 1786 and its carved stone portal — with its columns, niches, and carved reliefs — is the kind of thing you stop and stare at.

The interior is more modest than the facade promises, but the contrast between the church's ornate exterior and the simple whitewashed interior is itself interesting. León has so many churches that you could spend a day doing nothing but walking between them — La Recolección should be near the top of that list. The light on the facade is best in the late afternoon.
