Arboretum Nacional

The Arboretum Nacional is a tree garden and ecological reserve maintained by the National University of Nicaragua on the university campus. It holds a collection of native Nicaraguan tree species as well as introduced tropical species, and provides a shaded, quiet retreat from the noise and heat of the surrounding city.

It is not a large facility and does not attract many foreign visitors, but it has real value as a place to understand the country's native flora. Guided visits can be arranged through the university; self-guided walks are also possible. The campus setting means it is busiest on weekday mornings when students are around and quieter in the afternoons and on weekends. For anyone with an interest in tropical botany or just a need for a calm green space, it is worth the minor effort of getting there.
