Plaza de la República

The Plaza de la República is the symbolic centre of what was once Managua's old city, a large open square in the lakefront district flanked by the ruined Old Cathedral, the National Palace of Culture, and the Rubén Darío National Theatre. Before the 1972 earthquake, this was the heart of a colonial and then early-modern city; now it is a remarkable open space surrounded by ruins and monuments in a city that never rebuilt its centre.

The plaza is used for public events, political rallies, and outdoor markets, and it has a particular character at dusk when the floodlights illuminate the old cathedral ruins and the evening breeze comes off the lake. Walking across it gives the most direct sense of what the earthquake meant — the absence at the heart of the city, the way Managua simply never filled in the blank it left. It is more interesting for what it is not than for what it is.
