Parque de la Paz

Parque de la Paz is a small urban park in the old centre of Managua, created after the end of the Sandinista conflict as a symbol of national reconciliation. The park is built over a pit where thousands of weapons from both sides of the civil war were buried in 1990 following the election that ended eleven years of revolution and counter-revolution.

The park is modest in scale but has an unusual emotional resonance — a formal monument marks the weapon burial site, and the surrounding paths and benches are well tended. It is a quiet, reflective place in a city that rarely stops moving. The park is a short walk from the old cathedral ruins and the National Palace, making it an easy addition to a lakefront-area walk.

A story
After the Sandinista revolution ended with the 1990 election, the new government buried several thousand weapons from the civil war in a pit in the park. The burial was intended as a symbolic act of reconciliation — a country that had been tearing itself apart for a decade committing publicly to peace. A monument above the pit marks the spot.
