The Laguna de Asososca is a volcanic crater lake on the western edge of Managua, similar in origin to the Tiscapa Lagoon but larger and less developed. It serves as part of Managua's water supply, which means access to the crater rim is restricted — but the road around the outside of the reserve passes through a greener, quieter part of the city and gives views down into the blue-green water below.
The lagoon is one of three volcanic crater lakes within or near Managua (the others being Tiscapa and Nejapa), a reminder that the city sits in one of the most seismically active zones in Central America. On a clear day the drive around the western edge of the city with the lagoon below and Lake Managua behind offers the best visual sense of the volcanic geography that shapes the place.
