Parque Japonés (the Japanese Garden) is a small, carefully maintained garden in the Altamira district, donated to Managua by the Japanese government as part of development assistance. It has ornamental bridges, koi ponds, and traditional Japanese garden planting — a formal and slightly incongruous patch of tranquility in a tropical Central American capital.
The park is popular with families on weekends and with office workers eating lunch on weekdays. It is not large and you can walk through in 15 minutes, but the quality of the maintenance and the contrast with the surrounding city make it a pleasant stop. It also reflects the broader Japanese presence in Nicaragua through ODA funding — there are similar Japanese-funded parks and infrastructure projects scattered through the country.
