The grandest church in Basseterre, a tall stone Roman Catholic co-cathedral overlooking the eastern side of Independence Square. The present building dates from 1928, replacing an earlier 19th-century church destroyed by hurricane; its twin towers and a high vaulted nave dominate this corner of the old town.
The interior is calm and cool, with stained-glass windows depicting the Annunciation and the Assumption. The cathedral shares its title with a sister church on Nevis, hence "Co-Cathedral" — a quirk of the small Catholic Diocese of Saint John's–Basseterre. It is open most days for visitors outside service times.
