Romney Manor

A restored 17th-century plantation estate in the foothills of Mount Liamuiga, now home to Caribelle Batik, a workshop and showroom where you can watch artisans produce hand-dyed cotton in vivid Caribbean patterns. The gardens around the manor are the real attraction: tropical flowers, mature trees, and views down the valley to the sea.

The estate was once the centre of a large sugar plantation belonging to the Earl of Romney; the ruins of the old sugar boiling-house and mill stand a short walk away at the adjacent Wingfield Estate. Together they make one of the better insights into how the island's wealth was built.

A story
A 350-year-old saman tree on the grounds is reckoned to be the oldest tree on the island, its canopy spreading across nearly half an acre. Sam Jefferson II — great-great-great-grandfather of Thomas Jefferson — once owned the estate, before it passed through several hands and was eventually bought by the Caribelle Batik artisans now based here.
