A dormant stratovolcano rising 1,156 metres (3,792 ft) to dominate the north-western half of St. Kitts. The summit hike is one of the best in the eastern Caribbean: a steep, often muddy trail through rainforest of ferns, vines, and giant trees, populated by green vervet monkeys descended from pets brought by 17th-century French colonists.
The reward at the top is a view down into a crater nearly 400 metres deep, with a small lake at its floor and a forest growing inside the bowl. Allow five to six hours round trip and go with a guide — the trail is unmarked in places and rain can turn it treacherous. Start early; afternoon cloud often closes in on the summit.
