A small but absorbing museum on the harbour-side of the old Treasury Building, a fine 1894 colonial structure on Bay Road. The collection covers the island's pre-Columbian Kalinago heritage, the brutal sugar economy, the abolition of slavery, and the slow road to independence in 1983. Exhibits are modest but well-curated.
The building itself is worth a look — colonnaded, stone-and-stucco, with a clock tower that has been a landmark for cruise passengers walking up from Port Zante for over a century. Entry is inexpensive and the museum makes a good first stop on a walking tour of Basseterre.
