Old Road Town

A small fishing village on the west coast that holds the unlikely distinction of being the very first English settlement anywhere in the Caribbean. There is not much left to mark it — a roadside plaque, an old church, and a few stone walls — but the setting beneath the green flank of Mount Liamuiga is striking.

Stop here for the historical layering rather than for sights of its own: Romney Manor and the Wingfield Estate sugar ruins are a few minutes' drive up the hill, and the road continues north toward Brimstone Hill. The black-sand beach at the bottom of the village is quiet, with strong currents that make it unsuitable for swimming.

A story
Old Road was the first English settlement in the Caribbean, founded in 1624 by Sir Thomas Warner with a handful of colonists. Within a year the French had landed beside them, and the two nations agreed to split the island between them — an arrangement that lasted, on and off, for the next century and a half.
