A compact liberal arts college in the centre of Lexington, with Old Morrison — a grand 1833 Greek Revival temple — as its most photographed building. Henry Clay laid the cornerstone in 1832. The campus is small enough to walk through in 20 minutes and the Monroe Moosnick Medical and Science Museum (open by appointment) holds a remarkable 19th-century medical teaching collection — early anatomical models, a life-size papier-mâché figure cast from cadavers, instruments and apparatus from the medical school that closed in 1859.
Transylvania University
A story
Founded in 1780, Transylvania (literally 'across the woods') is the oldest university west of the Allegheny Mountains. Henry Clay studied law here. Jefferson Davis and a future Supreme Court justice were classmates in 1825. The medical school produced an early American cadaver-based teaching collection now displayed in the Moosnick Museum on campus.
