Michigan State University Campus

A green five-thousand-acre campus in East Lansing built around the Red Cedar River. The historic core, between the river and Grand River Avenue, is a National Register district with brick Gothic Revival buildings, sycamore-shaded walks, and the chiming Beaumont Tower at its centre.

Wander through Beal Botanical Garden (the oldest continuously operating botanical garden in the United States), past the chapels and the Sparty statue. The campus is open and walkable; pick up a map at the visitor centre. On a football Saturday in autumn, all of green-and-white Michigan converges on Spartan Stadium and you should be somewhere else.

A story
MSU was founded in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan — the first state-funded agricultural college in the United States and a model for the entire land-grant university system that followed under the 1862 Morrill Act. The original Beaumont Tower stands on the site of the first building.
