State Theatre

The State Theatre opened in 1928 as a vaudeville and silent-movie house and survives as one of the most intact Egyptian-revival cinemas in the Midwest. The interior — gilded ceilings, lotus-capital columns, a long flight of marble stairs — was the work of John Eberson, the architect behind dozens of "atmospheric" American theatres of the era.

Run today as a non-profit performing arts centre, with live music, classic film screenings, and occasional theatre. Worth ducking into to see the lobby even if there is nothing on.
