Canal Walk

A 1.25-mile riverside walk along the historic Haxall Canal and the James River, running from the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar east through Shockoe Bottom to the 17th Street Farmers Market. The walk passes interpretive signs, old lock gates, and the remains of Richmond's industrial waterfront, connecting several of the city's major historic sites through a pleasant waterside route.

The most scenic section is the first half-mile east of Tredegar, where the canal runs alongside the James with views of Belle Isle and the rapids. The walk is flat, paved, and can be combined with a visit to Belle Isle via the pedestrian bridge.
